Barcelona\u2019s El Prat Airport was also recently voted as the second best airport in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this precious asset could soon become less important as a result of what some believe amounts to \u2018petty\u2019 political disagreements about the proposed expansion of the airport.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10923 aligncenter lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ampliacio\u0301-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"276\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ampliacio\u0301-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ampliacio\u0301-18x12.png 18w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ampliacio\u0301-370x247.png 370w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ampliacio\u0301-20x13.png 20w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ampliacio\u0301-185x123.png 185w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ampliacio\u0301-400x267.png 400w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ampliacio\u0301-72x48.png 72w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/>Airport expansion project (LVE)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h6>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Airport expansion plans stalled\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A 1,7 billion euro plan to expand the airport resulted in a drawn-out debate which led to the eventual suspension of the plan in September 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The Spanish government and Aena, the country\u2019s airport operator (51% publicly owned), decided to suspend the plans due to a lack of consensus between the national Spanish and regional Catalan government about the proposals.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to extend the airport\u2019s current capacity from around 53 passengers (pre-pandemic figures in 2019) to 70 million passengers per year.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key aims is to turn the airport into an important international long-haul hub to rival Amsterdam\u2019s Airport Schiphol, London Heathrow Airport, and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.<\/p>\n<p>This will position Barcelona as a connecting city for flights between Asia and North America \u2013 widely expected to be the future drivers of the global economy.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>The third runway<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The controversy centers around the proposed extension of one of the airport\u2019s runways, which is crucial if Barcelona wants to accommodate more inter-continental flights.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, only one of the runways can accommodate the take-off of bigger planes used on inter-continental flights. However, because of complaints about noise pollution from residents\u2019 associations at the nearby Gav\u00e1 Mar beach district, the taking off of planes on this runway has to be restricted.<\/p>\n<p>What this means, is that the airport can\u2019t handle an increase in international air traffic. Environmentalists say this could destroy the biodiversity of the Llobregat delta.<\/p>\n<p>The Catalan government is divided over the airport\u2019s expansion plans and in addition, Barcelona\u2019s mayor, Ada Colau, is opposed to the plans due to concerns about an increase in air pollution.<\/p>\n<p>After more than two years of negotiations, the debate came to a halt in September 2021 as Spain\u2019s airport operator Aena withdrew funding for the expansion project until more consensus was reached between the parties involved.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why is this an important decision for Barcelona?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Barcelona has the potential to be one of the most important intercontinental hubs in Europe, particularly as Heathrow is expected to become less significant in the post-Brexit area.<\/p>\n<p>Barcelona\u2019s airport is already highly rated among international talent and counts as one of the city\u2019s major competitive assets.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say El Prat is ideally placed to become one of the biggest inter-continental airports \u2013 attracting flights from Asia and the US.<\/p>\n<p><em>The question, therefore is this: Does Barcelona want to have a European-dominated airport which will mean the city\u2019s future economic development will be mainly tourism-based, or to fulfil its potential to become one of the world\u2019s most attractive cities for international talent and one of the world\u2019s most important inter-continental hubs?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Barcelona Global believes the expansion of the airport is crucial for the future development of the city and for the city to continue to attract international talent.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10924 aligncenter lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/airport-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"279\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/airport-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/airport-18x12.png 18w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/airport-370x247.png 370w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/airport-20x13.png 20w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/airport-185x123.png 185w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/airport-400x267.png 400w, https:\/\/www.barcelonaglobal.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/airport-72x48.png 72w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><\/strong>Barcelona airport<\/h6>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Potential solutions\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Although the impact of an extension on the wetland area is not in dispute, proponents of the plan say it has been shown that the impact could easily be minimized, including the possibility of moving the wetland elsewhere.
