Asabys Partners, an investment fund for biomedical innovation
Josep Ll. Sanfeliu, Managing Partner and Co-founder of Asabys Partners
What does Asabys Partners do?
Asabys Partners is a venture capital fund management company that specializes in investments in the biomedical innovation sector: biotechnology, medical technology and digital health technology.
How long have you been part of the company?
I founded Asabys together with Clara Campas in 2018
What do you like most about your work?
Working in the biomedical field in Barcelona is a privilege, as the city is among the top ten biomedical research centers in the world. I also enjoy making a contribution to new developments in the treatment of diseases and helping to cover hitherto unmet medical needs. It’s great to have the chance to interact with internationally-renowned scientists, doctors and researchers who face enormous intellectual, scientific and clinical challenges on a daily basis.
And what do you like least?
The multi-disciplinary intensity and the very long hours.
What do you think your company is particularly good at?
A vision that takes in all that’s important for identifying opportunities. And the rigorous professional and human approach to our work.
What is Asabys' main challenge?
To achieve and exceed the results that society and patients expect from our investments, with the responsibility that this entails.
Where are you located? Do you know why this location was chosen?
On the Paseo de Gracia, in Barcelona. It’s a central location, a symbol of the city, and really well-connected. Barcelona is one of the five European biomedicine regions and also the international capital for medical congresses and scientific and medical activity in general.
What do you like most about the neighborhood where you work?
Everything is so close by; it has good transport links; and the artistic and warm atmosphere of a human and socially active urban environment.
How important is Barcelona for your company?
It’s a benchmark for international clinical science.
With which city would you compare Barcelona to?
Boston, Paris and Tel-Aviv.
What city model should Barcelona adopt?
There are few cities that can match the characteristics and socio-economic and cultural complexity of Barcelona. It must do its own thing.
What best practices from other cities would you like Barcelona to adopt??
Respect and admiration for entrepreneurs and scientific and technological initiatives, and a feeling of pride in being a city in which one can start up and conduct disruptive, innovative projects which meet global challenges.
What would you ask of the Barcelona of the future?
It should have a proactive approach to welcoming talent, ideas and the necessary capital, wherever it comes from. And it should encourage that talent to thrive through sensible public and municipal initiatives that work together with the private sector, And it should never abandon its unique urban character and social diversity.
