The LOOP festival, the only video art festival in the world, returns to Barcelona

The 18th LOOP festival, which can be enjoyed in 60 spaces dedicated to art and culture around the city, will close on 22 November.

Currently flooding Barcelona with video art, the LOOP festival is a leading showcase in its field and the only festival in the world devoted solely to video art.

From now until 22 November, visitors will be able to enjoy a wide range of exhibitions, projections, installations and live performances featuring the moving image in a variety of spaces and galleries around the city.

The work of 150 artists will be displayed at 60 around the city, such as the Arts Santa Mònica, where the festival was inaugurated and home to the central exhibition entitled, "Right now: everything is still to be done and everything is still possible".

As well as in Arts Santa Mònica, festival works can be found at the Picasso Museum, the Filmoteca, the Fundació Mapfre Kbr center, Casa Seat, and many other art galleries in the city.

One event, three sections

The LOOP festival is divided into three main sections. In addition to the festival proper, there will be two further elements: LOOP Studies, a series of talks, workshops and professional meetings promoting the recognition and appreciation of video and film, and LOOP Fair, a selection of films and videos by contemporary artists presented by international galleries, which this year will be available both online and at the Barcelona History Museum.

The LOOP festival is an open, dynamic event which provides an opportunity for video art to be the disseminated, marketed and reflected upon.

This year’s festival is a hybrid event which can still be attended in person, allowing artists, gallery owners and collectors to meet in situ.

The creators

This event is organized by the LOOP platform, which is directed by Emilio Álvarez and Carlos Durán and dedicated to the study and promotion of the moving image.

Founded in 2003, the platform offers a curated selection of video-related content and works with an international community of artists, curators, gallery owners, collectors, and institution directors to undertake projects that exploit the possibilities of video art.
