Fundació Joan Miró celebrates 50 years of showcasing Barcelona to the world

In 2025, Fundació Joan Miró celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking half a century as an international contemporary art reference. This milestone not only honors Joan Miró’s legacy but also reinforces the institution’s commitment to experimentation, education, and the global promotion of art.

Fundació Joan Miró was founded on June 10, 1975, in Montjuïc Park, born from the initiative of the artist himself and his close circle, particularly gallerist Joan Prats and architect Josep Lluís Sert. Designed to be an open and dynamic space, the Foundation set out from the very beginning to be more than just a museum: a center for contemporary art studies that would foster dialogue between artists and the public.

The building, designed by Sert, stands out for its rationalist architecture with Mediterranean influences, blending harmoniously into the Montjuïc landscape. Over the years, Fundació Joan Miró has brought together one of the most comprehensive collections of Miró’s work, with over 10,000 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and an extensive collection of preparatory drawings.

The anniversary will be celebrated over the course of a year, from June 10, 2025, to the same date in 2026, under the theme “Para la gente del mañana”, an invitation to connect Miró’s legacy with the creative concerns and visions of both the present and the future.

One of the anniversary’s standout exhibitions will be "La poesía acaba de empezar. 50 años de la Miró", which will kick off the celebration program with a broad and open look at the Foundation’s history and the motivations behind the creation of the Centro de Estudios de Arte Contemporáneo (CEAC). The exhibition will revisit key moments such as Joan Prats’ role in founding the institution, the political context of Francoist Spain, and the revival of the modernist spirit of the 1920s and 30s.

On June 15, 2025, Fundació Joan Miró will open its doors for a celebration day featuring workshops, storytelling sessions, film screenings, artist presentations, guided tours, and concerts.

Fundació Joan Miró is a great example of the role cultural institutions play in elevating the city’s international profile. Its commitment to innovation, education, and international collaboration strengthens Barcelona’s position as a global hub for creativity and contemporary culture.

This 50th anniversary not only celebrates the institution's past, but also looks to the future, reaffirming its mission to be a space open to art, thought, and society.
