«Barcelona Has a Unique Ability to Inspire», by Karra-Lee Gerrits

Karra-Lee Gerrits has been the Consul and Trade Commissioner at the Consulate of Canada in Barcelona since August 2023, managing the Science, Technology and Innovation portfolio for the Spanish market. In addition to Canada and Spain, she has lived in Venezuela, Mexico, the Philippines, Japan and the Netherlands, where she helped companies discover what Canada can offer as a trusted global partner, recognized for its leadership in innovation and sustainability.

Why did you choose Barcelona?

I have a strong interest in innovation and in the places and people who come together to spark new and creative ideas. Barcelona has a magnetic pull in this regard. I had never visited the city before, but the rich and diverse energy I discovered while researching my next destination told me it was a place where many forces come together for the better. I was eager to bring a bit of Canada to this celebration and see what could happen. A year and a half later, I know I made the right decision.

What are the city’s strengths?

Barcelona has a unique ability to inspire people of all kinds. Whether you're drawn to technology, art, culture, natural beauty, or outdoor activities, the city offers something for everyone. Its strength lies in the diversity of perspectives it brings together, promoting creativity and innovation. Combined with an environment and culture that encourage connection, Barcelona is an extraordinary spark for all kinds of magic to happen.

Which aspects of the city need to be improved? How?

Every strength comes with its challenges. While diversity is an incredible asset, it’s important to ensure that growth is inclusive. As global populations shift and evolve, cities, including Barcelona, must adapt to meet the needs of their communities, making sure no one is left behind. There's no simple answer for how to achieve this, but a community with open eyes, ears, and hearts is far less likely to go wrong.

What do you expect from Barcelona in the coming years?

Honestly, I hope the virtuous cycle that so many people in Barcelona have started (hats off to all of you!) keeps going and brings great things to the city and its people. I also hope to see even more diversity in the city’s international connections, and hopefully, many of those will be with Canada!

Which city do you consider to be your home city? What do you miss most?

The city I’m living in at any given time is “my city.” I’ve heard it said that you can never truly go back home, and after so many moves, I can say that’s true. Places move on in your absence, and memory isn’t the most reliable storyteller. All this to say that now, I live wherever my closest family is. Barcelona is a fantastic place, and I don’t intend to spoil it by focusing on all the things I’ll miss.
