Investment in mental health is crucial for the healthcare system, by Niki Civit
Based in New York since 2015, Niki Civit works for Headway, a startup that is pioneering mental health accessibility in the US.
Niki Civit asserts that “the American healthcare system is indefensible,” but he also points out the system based on private insurance “has recently started to focus on mental health, a sector that has been stigmatized in the past and still receives little investment.” He stresses that, in addition to the obvious need to take care of people’s mental health, the healthcare system also benefits as a whole since studies show that good mental health significantly reduces healthcare costs.”
According to Civit, affordable access to mental health is also needed in Barcelona and this involves “incorporating mental health professionals in our healthcare system.” This would enable professionals to receive the fees they deserve and ensure that patients are able to access care at a very low cost, or even free of charge. “Public investment (and/or private insurance) can, and should, be high, but a commitment to mental health investment is essential.” he concludes.
